Are Skyr yoghurts really good for you?
Sep 6, 20267 minIf you've ever strolled down the dairy aisle of your local grocery store, chances are you've come across these little tubs of Icelandic goodness. Skyr yoghurt has really grown in popularity in the last five to ten years. But is it really as healthy as it’s touted to be, or is its reputation down to marketing hype?  It's a traditional Icelandic yogurt, which is said to have been brought to Iceland by the Vikings when they settled there over a thousand years ago. It's marketed as a yoghurt, but is in fact technically a soft cheese. Skyr's uniqueness lies in its manufacturing process, which gives it that thick and creamy texture, similar to fresh cheese. How did it become so popular? What are the nutritional qualities of skyr? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Is microwaving food bad for you?
Sep 5, 20267 minIt’s been labelled a “marvel of engineering” and a “miracle of convenience” by Harvard Health Publishing. Data published by Statista in July 2022 showed that in 2018, 93% of UK households owned a microwave, a figure which had risen from 67% when the survey started back in 1994. But still some doubts persist about whether microwaving food is bad for your health. Some people even say they cause cancer. Rest assured they don’t. But there are a range of other complaints and concerns over food quality and health. So, are they simply urban myths or based on frightening reality? Let’s investigate! How do microwaves work? What causes lactose intolerance?
Sep 5, 20267 minIt's becoming a more common topic of discussion. According to BUPA.co.uk, “around one in every 10 older children and adults are thought to have lactose intolerance”. It might be thought of as a disease by some, but in fact it’s quite the opposite. Lactose intolerance is due to a natural process, which sees people’s bodies produce less of an enzyme called lactase as they age. Lactose is a natural sugar found in all mammalian milks, including cow's, sheep's, mare's, and even human breast milk. It's made up of galactose and glucose, two types of simple sugars. What’s the difference between lactose and lactase then? Do lactose intolerant people have to stop consuming all dairy products to avoid symptoms then? How can you determine if you have lactose intolerance? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Are you a time optimist?
Sep 5, 20265 minA time optimist is someone who is overly optimistic about how much time they have to do something, and therefore often ends up being late or missing deadlines. They tend to underestimate how long tasks will take, overestimate how much they can accomplish in a given period, and ignore potential delays or interruptions. They may also have a distorted perception of time, losing track of how fast it passes or how much is left. Time optimists are not necessarily lazy or irresponsible. They may have good intentions and high ambitions, but they lack realistic planning and prioritisation skills. They may also suffer from procrastination, perfectionism, or fear of failure, which prevent them from starting or finishing tasks on time.  Are there any benefits to being a time optimist? And how can you become more punctual and productive if you are a time optimist? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Why do we forget our dreams?
Sep 4, 20267 minOn average, we remember just one dream per week, and around 5% of us never remember any. But in reality, we all dream; it’s just that some of us never have any recollection of doing so. So why is it then that certain dreams stay with us, while others fade away immediately? It’s important to be aware that over the course of a night, we go through various phases of slow sleep, including deep sleep and REM sleep which is short for rapid eye movement sleep. A new cycle begins around every 90 minutes. And it’s during our REM sleep cycle that we have most of our dreams. Phases gradually get longer during the night, meaning we have our longest dreams in the morning. What actually happens to our bodies during REM sleep? Why don’t we all dream the same amount then? Is there anything we can do to better remember our dreams? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: How much do surrogate mothers get paid? How can you shop in a more eco-friendly way?
Sep 4, 20265 minFrom overbuying and unnecessary packaging to food waste, the way we shop can have a bigger environmental impact than we realise. In the UK, food and drink account for around a quarter of the average household's carbon footprint, according to the Carbon Trust. UK households throw away around 6 million tonnes of edible food every year, according to estimates from the UK's leading waste reduction charity. But there is  good news; a few simple changes to the way you shop can make a real difference. So, where should you start? Is food the only area where we can shop more sustainably? Can you really lose weight by walking?
Sep 3, 20266 minWalking is something we all do every day, but did you know it has numerous health benefits? It’s not just a simple way to get from point A to point B; walking can improve cardiovascular health, boost your mood, and even enhance your overall well-being. According to specialists, it can also help you lose weight under certain conditions. By incorporating regular, brisk walks into your routine, you can take advantage of these benefits and work towards your weight loss goals. First, you need to walk enough. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 10,000 steps a day to stay fit and maintain a stable weight. But if your goal is to lose weight, you’ll need to walk more and at a higher intensity. To really shed those pounds, aim to walk at least three times a week for an hour or more at a brisk pace (between 6 and 8 km/h) and maintain a heart rate between 135 and 160 beats per minute. So, what are those conditions? Is that enough to lose weight? Is one type of walking more effective than another? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Do women really watch less porn?
Sep 3, 20266 minA Swiss survey from 2023 suggests they do: 73% of women said they never watch pornography, compared to just 17% of men. Talking about porn consumption is still taboo and even more so for women. Sexologist and psychotherapist Patrizia Anex says that’s no surprise. Admitting to watching and enjoying porn is still frowned upon, she explains. Many women do it quietly, fearing judgment. But do women actually watch less porn, or just keep it to themselves? And how do women feel about the porn that’s out there? So why are more women watching now? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! What are the most hydrating foods?
Sep 2, 20264 minWe all know staying hydrated is crucial for feeling fit and healthy. The general recommendation is to drink between 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day. But let’s be honest, it’s not always easy to stick to that. Ideally, you shouldn’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water because thirst signals that your body has already lost about half a litre of water. But you might be surprised to learn that your diet can also play a big role in keeping you hydrated.  Which foods are the best for hydration? Are there hydrating options for winter? Sep 2, 20267 minPeriod underwear came out in 2013 but has increased in popularity, largely as they claim to be better for the environment and easy to use. However, in January 2023 Thinx, a leading US manufacturer of period underwear who branded themself as a sustainable alternative to single-use menstrual products has just settled a lawsuit regarding the presence of PFAs, also known as “forever chemicals.” Now people are wondering if period underwear is really as good as companies have made them out to be. How can I choose the right mattress for me?
Sep 1, 20267 minGetting restorative sleep and putting an end to back pain are both good reasons to opt for quality bedding. And if another reason was needed: on average, we spend 7-9 hours in bed every night and around a third of our lives sleeping in total. The problem is it can sometimes be like diving into a sea of options when it comes to mattresses. The most common type is the foam mattress, which adapts to all body shapes. Are additives bad for your health?
Sep 1, 20267 minAccording to The Sun, scientists say that “the average person in the UK now consumes more than eight kilograms of chemical additives every year.” Of course with that being an average figure, it can shoot up even further for those who eat a lot of ultra-processed foods.  If you’ve ever looked closely at ingredients lists on the packaging of food you buy in your supermarket, you’ll have noticed the E numbers by which additives can be recognised. Each category has its assigned E numbers. For example, colours are in the 100s, preservatives in the 200s and antioxidants in the 300s. Aren’t additives banned? What are they actually used for? Why do additives have such a bad rap then? What is attachment theory?
Aug 31, 20266 minEach of us has our own unique experience of social bonds, influenced by our childhood, previous relationships, and personality. And there’s actually a psychological theory that helps explain how we experience our relationships: attachment theory. In psychology, attachment is the strong bond between an individual and an "attachment figure." In most cases, our first attachment figure is the parent who takes care of us by meeting our needs from birth. Later on, the bond can become reciprocal between two adults, friends, or lovers. Aug 31, 20266 minAccording to the UK’s Department for Education, girls still make up fewer students choosing A-level maths and physics and even fewer go on to study engineering or computer science at university. Who is the richest man in history?
Aug 30, 20266 minElon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos… modern billionaires are in a league of their own. We’re often told that wealth comes from hustle, long hours, and smart decisions. But once you reach billionaire level we’re no longer talking about salaries, bonuses, or promotions. Take Jeff Bezos, for example. As of April 2025, Forbes estimated his fortune at around $236 billion. For comparison, the median salary in the U.S. is about $60,000 a year. So how long would the average American have to work to earn Bezos-level wealth? The answer: more than 3 million years and that’s assuming they never spend a single cent. Who was he? What is gooning during masturbation?
Aug 30, 20266 minYou know how an orgasm usually goes, right? It starts with those little shivers, then the heat builds, your heartbeat picks up, everything’s racing and boom! It peaks, and then everything just… drops. Curtain closed, show’s over. But picture this: what if you stayed right before that point of no return? Stretching out the pleasure, teasing it, keeping it going… and going. Well, that’s basically what’s behind a technique that’s been getting more and more popular in masturbation; it’s called gooning. What is a testicle bath?
Aug 30, 20267 minStill in this day and age, the burden of being responsible for birth control falls mainly on women. You’ve got an almost endless list of reversible female methods, such as the pill, coil, vaginal ring and the implant, with new ones never ceasing to emerge. On the other hand, when it comes to male contraceptives, the options out there are pretty limited. Mentalities are evolving but there is little communication on the subject. That’s despite trials on the male pill having been carried out as you may remember from listening to our past episode on male contraception. Of course, men can choose to get a vasectomy but that is a permanent procedure. How does it actually work? It wasn’t a man who came up with this? What to do when you’re exhausted after your holidays?
Aug 29, 20265 minIt may come as a surprise, but for some, summer isn’t always a time for rest and recharging. Quite the opposite, in fact. This phenomenon, known as “mid-year crisis” or “summer burnout,” is a type of seasonal depression that occurs during the summer months. According to The Guardian newspaper, symptoms include drowsiness, lack of appetite, decreased libido and energy, and a general feeling of being overworked and tired. These feelings can occur during or after vacations, even after a period of rest. It's as if the positive effects expected from a holiday were totally ephemeral. Worse, some people feel more sensitive and irritable than before their break. What are the symptoms? How do you explain this seasonal crisis? But isn’t summer supposed to be special? `In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Is it better sleeping with or without a pillow?
Aug 29, 20267 minWe don’t know about you, but some nights we just can’t fall asleep without turning onto our stomach. And when we do, we seem to drift off more easily when not using a pillow. But we do sometimes wonder whether doing that could have any negative health impact. Just like your mattress and bed base, the pillow plays a key role in sleep quality, but it’s often the most overlooked part of our bedding. You see, experts say that a pillow should help keep your spine properly aligned while you sleep, maintaining its natural curve, especially at the neck. That helps reduce pressure on the intervertebral discs, preventing tension in the cervical area. What are some of the other benefits? Are there any cases when it’s better not to use a pillow? Does music really make us more productive?
Aug 29, 20267 minLoFi, short for "Low Fidelity," it  blends elements of jazz with hip-hop rhythms, creating a relaxing soundscape. This genre has gained immense popularity, in part due to the YouTube channel *Lofi Girl*, which, as of October 2024, boasts over 14 million subscribers. The channel offers a 24/7 livestream of LoFi tracks designed to serve as ambient background music. Research on this topic offers mixed insights. According to BBC Science Focus, one study conducted in a textile factory found that slow-tempo music can actually decrease productivity by slowing workers' pace. The study suggested that more upbeat music might be more effective in maintaining productivity. But does it actually help with productivity? How should you choose music for work? Has the climate breakdown really begun?
Aug 28, 20265 minOn September 6th, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres released a 96-word statement in which he referred to “climate breakdown” having begun. It was in response to a report from the World Meteorological Organization, which highlighted the impact of record-breaking heatwaves across the globe this summer.  June, July, and August 2023 are the hottest three-month period ever recorded. The WMO says that the increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves we’re experiencing are causing air quality to decline, impacting human health. What’s the definition of “climate breakdown”? Why should you pee after having sex?
Aug 28, 20267 minI don’t know about your love life, but let’s be honest; for most people having sex doesn’t work out as smoothly as what you see in the movies. Not only is the act itself idealised, but so is what comes after. On screen, you tend to see couples snuggling and drifting off in each other's arms, all cosy and serene.  But what movies tend to skip over is the part where you have to slip out of bed with your legs pressed together, and waddle like a penguin to the bathroom to pee and wash up. OK, it might feel like a bit of a mood killer, but it’s actually very important for staying healthy. How does peeing stop bacteria from reaching the bladder? What are the craziest beauty ‘standards’ in history?
Aug 28, 20267 minIn French, when someone is beautiful, you can say they’re  ‘canon’. The word itself means a general law, rule, princely or criteria by which something is judged, but when it comes to beauty it is simply means model that we elevate to the level of perfection. Except that this model has changed a lot over the centuries and across cultures. Those who are considered “canons” today would have been considered ugly in another era.  And some of the beauty standards of the past would probably look downright grotesque to us today.
