Anil Seth is Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex, Director of the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science, and Co-Director of the CIFAR Program on Brain, Mind, and Consciousness. His mission is to advance the science of consciousness and put its insights to work for society, technology, and medicine. Seth is one of the most prominent public voices in consciousness research. His 2021 book Being You: A New Science of Consciousness became a Sunday Times top-10 bestseller and was named a Book of the Year by The Economist, The Guardian, the Financial Times, New Statesman, and others. He was founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Neuroscience of Consciousness (2014–2024) and has been a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (top 0.1% by citation impact) from 2019 through 2025. Seth’s research and writing explore how the brain constructs the experience of being a self in a world—why perception is a kind of controlled hallucination, how consciousness arises from the brain’s predictive activity, and what that means for AI, medicine, and our understanding of what it is to be you.
