When you post a photo, whose story are you telling? In this compelling talk, photographer Jen Allison shares how the stories we tell through images shape not only how we see others, but how entire communities are understood. From documenting her newborn son’s medical journey to collaborating with Indigenous youth through participatory photography projects, she reveals how cameras can either reinforce stereotypes or create space for authentic voices to be heard. Exploring visual storytelling, consent, representation, identity, and the power of perspective, this talk challenges us to rethink who gets to tell the story and who gets left out of the frame. In a world flooded with images and social media content, learning to shift the lens may be one of the most important skills we can teach the next generation. Jen is a professional photographer, educator, and keynote speaker who works at the intersection of creativity and courage. Allison began her career assisting top commercial photographers in Toronto before launching her portrait and branding business in 2016. She has worked with entrepreneurs, agencies, and communities across Canada to create story-first imagery that highlights humanity over perfection. Today, she teaches photography at Humber Polytechnic and Centennial College. She leads workshops for emerging photographers and collaborates on visual storytelling projects with youth and communities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
