The Gift You Give Best Is the One You Needed Most | Jason VanRuler | TEDxSioux Falls

This talk centers on a simple but powerful insight: the gift you give best is often the one you needed most. Drawing from psychology, leadership, and personal experience, he explores how many of our greatest strengths began as solutions to something we once lacked. Over time we become highly skilled at giving that gift to others yet rarely learn how to receive it ourselves. But when we finally do, the gift that we once gave automatically becomes something we can offer intentionally, changing the way we lead, relate, and show up in the moments that matter. Jason VanRuler became fascinated by a quiet pattern he kept seeing in his work: some of the most generous, successful and dependable people were also the most exhausted. Growing up in the Midwest, he was the kid who felt deeply, asked questions about relationships, and, as he jokes, “always dressed like a therapist.” After early success in the recruiting industry, that curiosity eventually led him into psychology, where he began working with leaders, founders, and couples navigating some of life’s most complex moments. Today he is a psychotherapist, nationally recognized speaker, and author of two books including Discovering Your Communication Type. His work centers on a powerful insight: the gift you give best may be the one you once needed most. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
