In this clip from our Deeper Look of Surah Al-Hujurat, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan unpacks one of the most overlooked dimensions of Ayah 49:12, the verse in which Allah asks whether any of you would love to eat the flesh of your dead brother and you would despise that. Most people hear this verse and think about the person doing the backbiting. Ustadh Nouman shows why that reading is incomplete. The grammatical choice Allah makes, addressing the prohibition in the third person rather than directly, is deliberate: it covers not only the one speaking but every person sitting in the room who heard it and said nothing. Silence, in this Ayah, is a violation. He then walks through the real reasons people backbite or permit it around them: unaddressed anger, the fear of social awkwardness, a need to deflect attention from their own flaws and jealousy toward others who appear happy. The image Allah chose, eating your own brother's dead flesh, is so viscerally repulsive precisely because our tongues produce harm we have grown numb to. The ugliness of the image is the point.
