Tech critic Ed Zitron, host of the Better Offline podcast and one of the most cited voices warning that AI is a bubble, lays out a detailed case for why he believes a crash is coming, and why ordinary people's retirements could be the biggest casualty. Zitron argues we are not just in an AI bubble but what he calls a "RotCom" bubble, and that the collapse likely begins with one company running out of money: OpenAI. He explains that OpenAI needs to raise at least 100 billion dollars a year just to survive, that its planned public listing has been pushed back, and that if it can't go public, a chain of companies tied to it (SoftBank, Oracle, and the big cloud providers) are all exposed. Oracle, he notes, is building over 400 billion dollars of data centers largely for OpenAI, and its revenue has been flat for 15 years when adjusted for inflation. Without OpenAI, he argues, Oracle is in serious trouble. He then explains the domino effect that worries him most. Nvidia is the largest company in the S&P 500 and NASDAQ, making up 7 to 8% of the index, and he believes its revenue could fall 50 to 70% because of what he describes as circular financing (Nvidia funding companies that then raise debt to buy more of its GPUs). When that unwinds, he believes Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta will have to restate their growth guidance, triggering a market pullback.
