The court I never returned to | Shriya Kharade | TEDxThe Orchid School

At eleven years old, I believed my future was already written on a badminton court. Years of training, discipline, and dreams pointed in one direction, until a career-changing injury forced me to step away from the sport I loved. What felt like the end of everything I had built became the beginning of something far more meaningful than I could have ever imagined. In this talk, I share how losing a dream taught me lessons that winning never could. Through moments of disappointment, self-discovery, and resilience, I explore how setbacks often reveal strengths we never knew we had. Sometimes, the paths we never planned lead us to the people we become. “The Court I Never Returned To” is not just about sports or failure; it is about redefining ambition, embracing change, and understanding that our identity is not limited to a single dream. It is a reminder that ambition is most powerful when guided by awareness, and that our greatest strength lies not in avoiding life's unexpected turns, but in how we choose to turn them into new beginnings. Shriya Kharade is a Grade 12 student at The Orchid School, Pune, with a love for storytelling, leadership, and trying new things. A published poet, student leader, sportsperson, and public speaker, she enjoys expressing ideas in ways that connect with people, whether through writing, on stage, or as part of a team. Over the years, Shriya has captained school sports teams, anchored major school events, volunteered with a nonprofit organisation, and taken on leadership roles that have taught her the value of resilience, teamwork, and adaptability. She believes that growth often comes from experiences that challenge us the most. In her TEDx talk, Shriya shares how an unexpected injury changed not only her plans but also her perspective on ambition and success. Through her story, she hopes to encourage others to embrace uncertainty, stay aware of what truly matters, and find the courage to keep moving forward even when life takes an unexpected turn. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
