31 Eki 2026
On their first day of training, all aspiring officers in US Navy Officer Candidate School must endure a punishing gauntlet known as "First Tuesday," an intense event that tests them mentally and physically in the span of just under two hours. Business Insider's chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan went inside “First Tuesday” at Navy OCS in Newport, Rhode Island as 126 candidates began their journey toward earning their commissions as Naval officers. Led by a US Marine Corps drill instructor, the event sets the tone for the 13-week training course, potentially weeding out anyone having second thoughts. Why America Abandoned Route 66
25 Eki 2026
In the 1940s and '50s, Route 66 was one of America's most popular highways, driving business to small towns from Chicago to Santa Monica. But today, the road and its people have been largely forgotten. Ghost towns, empty motels, and abandoned gas stations line its path. Chief correspondent Abby Narishkin grew up along the road. In celebration of its 100th anniversary, she drove down the old route herself to visit the people and businesses still keeping this Americana legacy alive. Also read "Route 66 turns 100 this year. How Far Can A Human Run In One Day? | Pushing Limits
16 Eki 2026
Aleksandr Sorokin ran 198.6 miles, the equivalent of nearly eight marathons, in a single day. We talked to the athletes and scientists pushing the limits of human endurance to find out why that's so hard to do. It turns out six variables have to be perfectly aligned to break a distance-running world record. They include a metric called VO₂ max, cutting-edge footwear, and the athlete's mindset. We looked at all of them. Inside America's Only Internet Sea Cable Maker
11 Eki 2026
Ninety-nine percent of international internet traffic flows through cables stretched across the ocean floor. Demand for these cables is at an all-time high as the world becomes more dependent on cloud computing and AI. But there's only one company in America that's capable of both making and laying them. We visited its 73-year-old factory and boarded a multimillion-dollar cable-laying ship to see how the company keeps up and why our data still needs to travel thousands of feet under the sea. Editor's note: At 1:28, we incorrectly say a fiber could transmit hundreds of terabytes of information every second. How Amazon's Low Prices Raised Prices | So Expensive
10 Eki 2026
The state of California is accusing Amazon of a price-fixing scheme that pushes wholesale vendors to raise prices at competing stores like Target, Walmart, Chewy, and Best Buy. And the state says, after the discovery process, it now has receipts to prove it. The case centers on several email exchanges between Amazon vendor managers and brands like Levi's, GlobalOne, Hanes, and Scotts Miracle-Gro. Business Insider obtained the full case file and reviewed hundreds of pages of documents and over a dozen email exchanges to investigate whether Amazon uses its influence as the largest e-commerce company in the United States to compel vendors to raise prices at competing retailers. We also spoke with several third-party sellers, like the inventors of the Bed Scrunchie, who say they, too, are pressured by Amazon to raise prices at other retailers. So, has Amazon become too big and powerful? And is it possible the company is using its power to drive up prices everywhere? Also read "This entrepreneur says Amazon nearly destroyed his business. The Smuggled Resource Funding Sudan's Civil War
27 Eyl 2026
Sudan has historically been the top producer of gum arabic, a pink resin that ends up in lots of products, from Coca-Cola and M&M's to makeup and pills. But Sudan has been in the grips of civil war since 2023, which has displaced an estimated 14 million people. The war has devastated the lives of gum arabic farmers. Gum trees have been cleared, and exports to the US have dropped. With Western companies now looking to Sudan's neighbors to source it, experts say smuggled gum arabic is funding the civil war and likely the purchase of weapons by paramilitary groups. ------------------------------------------------------ #Sudan #gumtree #gumarabic #resin #sudanwar #bigbusiness WATCH MORE FROM "BIG BUSINESS": Inside Turkey's $2 Billion Marble And Stone Industry https://youtu.be/KIBJAEZMxwo How Miners Risk Their Lives For Himalayan Pink Salt https://youtu.be/HjSQ10zDB0k Why Mining In Greenland Is So Hard https://youtu.be/xUzIqdEPC-k Mining 60,000 Metric Tons Of Salt In A Dangerous Pink Lake That's Saltier Than The Dead Sea https://youtu.be/Yc827HubVjY Business Insider is a global newsroom covering business, technology, innovation, and the economy. How AI Agents Are Changing Business Decision-Making
24 Eyl 2026
Sponsored by ZS Business leaders don't want more AI, they want better outcomes. ZS's Aaron Mitchell explains why leaders need to rethink how people and AI agents work together to deliver more. Mitchell outlines how decision systems can do this: sensing, modeling, deciding, and acting. What Merchant Marine Academy Plebes Go Through On Day Zero | Boot Camp
23 Eyl 2026
We got an inside look at what it's like on the first day for new plebes at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. 287 plebe candidates arrived on campus for the beginning of "indoctrination," a 16-day period full of intense mental and physical tests. During our visit, we saw plebe candidates getting their heads shaved, learning proper movements and responses, and enduring an event known as "the Grinder," where their instructional cadre commands and corrects them with loud intensity. After an emotional farewell to their families, the plebe candidates take their first steps toward becoming licensed officers in the US Merchant Marine. Most graduates go on to work as licensed officers aboard commercial and government ships, either navigating and managing the vessel or operating its engines and machinery. But during wartime, these civilian mariners can become a critical part of the military supply chain, operating ships that carry weapons, vehicles, fuel, ammunition, and other supplies to US forces overseas. Why Electric Planes Are Almost Impossible | Pushing Limits
18 Eyl 2026
Electric cars took decades to go mainstream — electric planes might take even longer. We flew in BETA Technologies' Alia CX300, one of the most promising electric aircraft in the world, to find out why battery-powered flight has stayed almost impossible for more than 50 years. The aviation industry has burned through more than $20 billion with barely a working commercial product to show for it — Zunum Aero, Eviation, and Lilium all collapsed after raising serious money. So how is BETA different, and when will the rest of us actually get to fly electric? How Owning Your Own AI Can Unlock Smarter, More Precise Agents
15 Eyl 2026
Sponsored by Dell AI Factory with NVIDIA At the dawn of agentic AI, off-the-shelf models seemed to eliminate the complexity that was coming at enterprise leaders at breakneck speed. Now that enterprise AI dexterity has matured, it's become clear that generic models make for generic agents, and that better outcomes will result from smaller, smarter models trained on your data and on AI infrastructure you own. Dr. Jon Krohn and Frank Basso of Lightning AI break down this mindset shift in terms that will resonate with leaders: ROI that shows up in business outcomes and reduced token usage. Hospitals are notorious for bad food. When patients eat poorly, it can increase the price of their stay by 30%, and malnourishment costs the US healthcare system billions each year. But offering good food isn't easy. Many hospitals operate on negative margins. Some have a budget of as little as $4 per patient meal according to US Foods. Now, one New York City medical network is changing the cliche thanks to an unexpected character: a Michelin-starred chef. We paid a visit to learn how Northwell Health went from getting one-star food reviews to serving up five-star dishes like seared scallops and lobster linguine. 00:00 - Intro 01:24 - Bad Reviews 02:32 - Head Chef Bruno Tison 03:09 - Hiring Michelin-Starred Chefs 04:08 - Saving $250,000 05:29 - Cooking Food 02:22 - Serving Patients 08:40 - Taste Test 10:18 - Why Hospital Food Sucks 10:50 - Trump's Medicaid Cuts 11:19 - Hospitals Are Closing 12:30 - Credits ------------------------------------------------------ #hospitalfood #michelinstar #chefs #hospitals #heathcare #bigbusiness WATCH MORE: How One Factory Supplies NYC's Bodegas https://youtu.be/bxVvA8SfJpc The Rise And Fall Of Southern Cafeterias https://youtu.be/T9AQJj2Pquo Inside Rikers Island’s Jail Kitchen https://youtu.be/X05BsYqZSdg Business Insider is a global newsroom covering business, technology, innovation, and the economy. How AI Data Centers Are Making Everything More Expensive
29 Ağu 2026
The rapid growth of AI data centers is creating a shortage of the memory chips used in everyday devices like laptops, phones, cameras, and gaming consoles. The world's three largest memory chipmakers — SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron — are shifting production to High Bandwidth Memory, specialized microchips that power AI data centers, rather than the DRAM and NAND chips found in many consumer electronics. With fewer traditional chips being produced, tech manufacturers are paying more for components and passing the costs to customers through higher prices. Why Uber Is More Expensive ... For Some People
22 Ağu 2026
Uber once sold riders on a simple promise: Order a car right from your phone for less than a taxi. One major change happened behind the scenes: up-front pricing. Instead of relying on a predictable rate based largely on time and distance, Uber now uses algorithms and a range of real-time factors to determine what riders pay and what drivers earn. Since then, prices have risen dramatically. From 2018 to 2022, average Uber fares in the US rose 83%, nearly four times the annual rate of inflation. And when Business Insider employees requested the same UberX ride at the same time, the highest fare was nearly 21% more expensive than the lowest. A larger Consumer Reports test of Uber and Lyft found even wider gaps on some routes. Critics accuse Uber of using AI and algorithms to extract the most money from consumers while paying drivers the least. Uber flatly denies using personalized data and cites higher costs and a post-pandemic driver shortage among the reasons prices have skyrocketed. So, how does Uber actually set your fare? And what is the real reason Uber rides are so expensive? 9 Ways Everyday Life Is Becoming More Expensive
1 Ağu 2026
Business Insider has spent years covering the stories behind why certain items, services, and experiences are getting more expensive, and the reasons behind higher price tags aren't always what you think. Airports have rules to keep prices in check, but our investigation uncovered that mandatory price audits aren't always accurate. US sports stadiums typically don't have rules capping concession prices, though some lawmakers are attempting to change that. And subscriptions are everywhere, transforming the economy from one where we own products to one where we can rent just about anything. How Goodwill Actually Works
31 Tem 2026
Goodwill handles over 4.4 billion pounds of donations every year. Most of it gets cleaned, priced, and sold at a retail store. For some, flipping Goodwill finds lead to massive paydays. Now Goodwill is using AI listing tools to sell the best items online before they ever reach the floor. That's squeezing the thrifters who built businesses on nabbing hidden treasures. We got behind-the-scenes access to see how Goodwill sorts and sells millions of items a year, then followed the resellers fighting for what's left. Some are earning six figures sourcing vintage clothes by the pound. Others have moved to live selling on Whatnot, which hit $8 billion in sales in 2025, nearly as big as Goodwill itself. Editor's Note: At 11:10, we reported that Whatnot surpassed $6 billion in sales in 2025. That figure was a projection.
