Exercise Scientist’s #1 Way To GAIN Muscle Faster
Open in Hinto About this video
Dr. Andy Galpin, Professor of Kinesiology and Executive Director of the Human Performance Center at Parker University, explains why the way most people train wastes time, and how focusing on one thing gets you more results with less effort. The conversation starts with grip strength. Steven mentions he was told it's the single biggest predictor of longevity. Galpin adds crucial nuance. It's true that grip strength is a useful, cheap health marker (under 40 dollars for a device), and people who are very weak tend to be in worse health on average. But the field has taken it too far. Optimizing your grip strength (going from the 80th to the 90th percentile) probably won't make you live a day longer. What grip strength really tests is your nervous system as much as your muscle, which is why grip strength asymmetry (a big difference between your two hands) is now studied as an early predictor of neurological conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Steven tests his own grip strength on camera, and the results reveal something surprising: his stronger side on the device isn't his overall stronger side, proving grip strength is a specific type of strength rather than a clean proxy for total-body strength. Galpin then explains the difference between strength and power, a distinction most people miss. Strength is force (mass times acceleration). Power is force multiplied by velocity, how fast you can move a load. This matters because "powerpenia," the accelerated loss of muscle power with age, is highly associated with falls, fractures, and dislocations after 60, which are among the most health-destroying events as you get older. Training for power means moving a moderate load with speed, not lifting heavy slowly.
