241: Clench Your Butt Cheeks: 🍑 Our Greatest Interview Hack!
28 okt 202635 min
If you've been listening to Interview Boss for a while, chances are you've heard us tell you to CLENCH YOUR BUTT CHEEKS in a job interview. Yes, seriously.

It's one of our most iconic (and ridiculous) interview tips, and after years of mentioning it on the pod, we realised it deserved an episode of its own.

In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma explain the surprisingly clever science behind why clenching your butt cheeks could help stop your hands from shaking when interview nerves kick in.

We also share some hilarious stories from listeners who've put it to the test.

Consider this your official invitation to join the butt-clenching club. 🍑

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Amanda who bought us 5 coffees!

"Dear Emma and Sarah, I have always gotten ridiculously nervous before interviews, and have often left them feeling that my nerves were the reason I didn't move forward. Especially the classic 'Tell me about yourself' question that would trip me up! I started listening to your podcast over the summer and found especially the 'best bits' and 'tell me about yourself' advice to help. I also listened to your 'listen to this before your interview' pep talk before every interview! And here I am, a couple of months later, having landed my DREAM job. I am so proud of myself and honestly thought that this was impossible. Not because of my skills, but because of my inability to clearly and confidently communicate in an interview setting. The job comes with a 59% salary increase, way better benefits and a lot of responsibility in a strategic area. Truly a dream, especially as we have just bought a house, have a baby AND my partner has been laid off. A tip for others: I used Ghat GPT and a dictation tool to practice interview questions and get super comfortable with talking about my experience out loud. Thank you for your help! Best wishes from Denmark. - Amanda."

Mentioned in this episode:

Think Fast, Talk Smart episode

How to deal with job interview nerves

Listen to this RIGHT before your interview

🎥 Check out BRAND NEW free training - Top Interview Tips https://www.interviewboss.com.au/top-interview-tips

🏫 To get step by step help with your interview prep on demand check out our Interview Academy https://www.interviewboss.com.au/interview-academy

☕ Did our podcast help you out? 240: How to Stop Waffling in Job Interviews
22 okt 202624 min
Being told you need to be more concise in job interviews can be frustrating, especially when you're not sure what you're doing wrong.

If you find yourself rambling, overexplaining or losing track of your point, the solution isn't necessarily to make your interview answers shorter.

In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma unpack why interview answers can sometimes turn into long-winded stories, how to structure your examples to avoid waffling, and why being concise is about cutting the confusion, not the details that make your answers great.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Lonny who bought us 5 coffees!

"Dear Emma and Sarah, I've been waiting to send this email for years! I began listening to your podcast in 2023 while I was preparing for an interview for a manager role at my company. I was a successful individual contributor in a technical role shooting for a manager spot in my department. I did not end up getting the job. I was told that my interview was one of the best of the lot. However, lack of supervision experience is what ultimately lost me the job. I've spent the last 3 years working in supervisor roles in 2 different areas of the company that were outside of my area of expertise. I took advantage of your coffee chat strategies and have created a good mentor relationship with a senior leader at my organization. These moves have not only been great in building my leadership skills, I've also been getting perspective from different departments and learning how my company operates. I feel like I have a much better systemic understanding of the business and have learned so many interesting things. A few months ago, the same Manager role from 2023 opened again. Though I have been out of the group for 3 years, I knew I would be competitive in the pool of strong candidates. Especially with my added supervision experience. I spent the last month re-listening through your episodes and prepping my best bit notebook that I have been keeping for this moment. I was feeling confident going into interview day, and I absolutely crushed it. I took advantage of the 'tell me about yourself' question to highlight my previous attempt at the role and everything I have done to improve myself since then. I brought it around full circle. None of the behavioral questions gave me pause. And we spent more time discussing the questions I had prepared than we did on their questions! This week, I was offered and accepted the role. Along with a 25+% pay raise with a much larger bonus as well. I am so happy and excited to get started in my new role! Thank you both so much for all of the wisdom, insight, and laughs over the years. I know I will continue to listen to and share your show and the resources you provide as long as you continue to make content. 239: The Great Iced Coffee Debate: Is It Really an Interview Red Flag?
12 okt 202630 min
Can bringing an iced coffee into a job interview really leave a bad impression?!

A recruiter's viral take has sparked a heated debate online, and we're weighing in!

Is it genuinely unprofessional, or have we taken interview etiquette a step too far?

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Karen from Ireland who bought us 3 coffees!

"I listened to your podcast religiously for weeks and it really helped me hone in on the areas I needed to improve, strategise for my interview & my biggest take away’s were resetting after each question, staying calm & the double plugger! 3rd interview of doing interviews to just improve skills but first one after listening to your podcast I was hit with a three part question as the first question😱and my first thought was “whoa, A TRIPLE PLUGGER”…right let’s go! And I dived in applying the technique🥰 I shot my best shot over a few interviews and I got a fab new job that also happened to be a grade & a half promotion. The public sector in Ireland works off a panel system and a competency based interview, all looking for STAR application so if you ever want to 'irish-ify' a session let me know and I’ll gladly help with the lingo & inspo. I added an intro sentence before STAR telling them how amazing/how much experience I had in that area, then STAR, then what i called the uplift - one sentence or point - '& if I got the job I would….My skill in this area is…and would make me a great fit for the role' at the end. 3-4 min answers then Zip it. 23 sep 202636 min
When you’ve wanted a job for years, how do you stop yourself from putting it on a pedestal?

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma share mindset tips for managing interview nerves when the opportunity feels really important, and shifting from “I have to get this job” to “this is a conversation I’m capable of having.”

We’ll help you take the pressure down a notch and walk into your interview feeling more grounded, confident and like yourself.

If you haven't already, click here to listen to our other episode on this topic.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Stephanie who bought us a coffee!

"I was doing a job in child protection that I loved for 9 years when I was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2023. After 17 rounds of chemo, radiation, and 2 major surgeries, I realized my recovery from the last surgery would take longer than the 8 weeks my surgeon's office recommended on my disability leave form. I requested the full 12 weeks and the response from leadership was that they were going to post my position. I responded by saying I'd be there on Monday and then they granted the additional 4 weeks after polling my friends/coworkers. My heart was broken and I completely lost trust, but needed health insurance. I was so hurt and, honestly, being cancer free was so much harder than having it because of the adjustment to my rectum amputation. Things had shifted in me as my body healed and in January I applied for a new job for the first time in 11 years. I listened to your podcast on every trip to and from work, listened to some more than once, fixed my resume, worked on my best bits, and started interviewing shortly thereafter. I had 3 zoom interviews for separate positions and 2 in person interviews. I did not get either of the positions, but felt good about how well I did and wasn't disappointed. I appreciated the experiences because they were setting me up for my next interview. Well...that didn't happen because a new position was created and they called to see if I would be interested. They didn't even post the position as it was an immediate yes from me! I start Monday! Thank you so much for the work you do. You are so good at it! I tell everyone who is job searching to listen in. You've created a space which makes finding something new feel more attainable."

237: How to Break Into a Highly Competitive Job
16 sep 202630 min
What do you do when your dream job rarely comes up...and thousands of other people want it too?

From airlines and emergency services to government graduate programs, intelligence and wildlife roles, some jobs are notoriously tough to land.

In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma unpack how to prepare when opportunities are few and far between, build experience that strengthens your next application, and decide just how much you're willing to trade for the dream.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Derby who bought us 5 coffees!

"Googling 'Tell us about yourself' became the resource I never expected while navigating this interview process. That led me to best bits, interviewing for an internal position, applying for my first manager role, making a presentation. Anything that I've experienced in this process so far, y'all had an episode for me to listen to. The only thing I couldn't find was something about full day interviews, I just went from 8:30AM-3:30PM, phew....but I still had y'all with me as I listened right before and right after. I was already on my way to get my treat with my family and I cracked up when I received y'alls affirmation! From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Y'all were the push I needed to be comfortable bringing in notes. Even if I didn't reference my written best bits a lot throughout the day today, the process of writing them out had them top of mind. I ended up with 59 best bits to play with! I came to the table with a masters degree for this doctorate preferred position, but I met every other qualification and had experience to back up every piece of the job description, so I was confident that I would get my shot. I was debating on whether I should wait to share until I hear back, but that doesn't matter. I left that interview today with no regrets. I laid the best of myself out there and there's nothing else to do. Y'alls impact isn't in whether I get the job or not, you helped me have the best possible experience I could throughout these interviews. 236: How to interview for the job you're already doing!
7 sep 202627 min
Have you ever been asked to reapply and interview for a job you're already doing?

It can feel strange, and a little unfair, to prove you can do a job you've already been successfully doing.

But while being the internal candidate gives you a major advantage, treating the interview like a done deal can be a risky mistake.

In this episode, Sarah and Emma explain how to make the most of your insider knowledge and turn your experience in the role into detailed, persuasive answers.

Because even if the panel knows you and your work, you still need to spell out exactly why you're the best person for the permanent position.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Sarah who bought us 5 coffees!

“Hi from England I have been listening to your podcast throughout my job search and interviews, as my fiancé has now moved over to Sydney for his job and I’ve been looking at job opportunities so I can join him. After I received my visa to work there (woohoo!) and listened to your podcasts, I have received a verbal job offer! I particularly valued your tips on presentations, which helped me prepare for my 90-day plan presentation at the second stage. I have been asked to provide details of referees ahead of a formal job offer, so I had to break the news to my manager. I feel so guilty but know it’s the right decision. He was clearly on problem solving mode to work out how my activities will be completed when I leave. My question is, how can I reframe my guilt and sadness to face him, and how can I let go of my dream job of 11 years, to look forward to this exciting new chapter? What is the best way to resign after giving him the heads up and how do I let my team know? I want to help with upcoming work but know it will be awkward, especially as I really enjoy my job and will need to pass projects onto colleagues, including to my team, over the next couple of months. Perhaps it’s an opportunity to empower my team through more responsibility? It’s been a mix of emotions, particularly with the fact that I’ll leave family, friends and my home, but I can’t wait to be in Australia later this year! Thanks again for all your support!”

235: Should you “link it back” to the job in your interview answers?
12 aug 202646 min
Have you ever been told to “link it back” to the job at the end of your interview answers? You know the kind of thing: you finish your example and then tack on a little sentence explaining how you’d use those same skills in this role.

It sounds like decent advice. You’re trying to make a point about your transferable skills, and get your interviewers to imagine you in the job.

In this episode, Sarah and Emma break down why “linking it back” might not be achieving what you want it to, and give you an alternative. Our goal is to have your interviewers doing the linking for you, and ideally giving you some enthusiastic nods so you know it’s working.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Amanda who bought us 5 coffees!

“Thank you both so much! I just landed the job I’ve been wanting for years. In college I had a personal emergency and had to drop out of college for bit. This derailed me and my mental health and I was no longer able to get back into the curriculum with my old major without adding a semester to my graduation date which I couldn’t afford. So I switched to a similar major, but it wasn’t the same. Then I took a job at a start-up over a more stable offer, only for the start-up to move operations overseas and lay me off three months later. I started working at an office job just to pay my loans but I wasn’t learning anything or using my degree. I was so scared to go back into a job I cared about that I stayed there for almost two years. When I did look, I was asked why I would stay as a secretary when I said I wanted to be in an analytical role. Everything changed when I found your podcast. I was able to articulate my career story in a way that was both true and sounded professional and intentional. I could answer questions, work my best bits in, and even just hearing your wording and logic behind answers helped me emulate that in the interviews for curveballs (which there were a lot of). It helped me build my confidence and I listened to your podcast for support for everything from the interviews, my resume, and quitting. In the US the job market is tough right now, but I landed a role doing what I want to do at a fortune 100 company! I was told it was one of their most competitive seasons too! Now I feel like I’ve truly bounced back from the issues I had in college and am back on track. I know I have a lot to offer and am on my way to my first in person day at work! 234: When your industry doesn’t really “do” interviews
29 jul 202629 min
Does your industry treat the hiring process like the Wild West? Maybe resumes are optional, cover letters are unheard of and the “interview” is really just a chat with the boss.

Just because it’s “just a chat” doesn’t mean a little preparation won’t help. Putting more thought into your resume, bringing a few stories to mind, preparing some questions or writing a genuinely personalised cover letter can help you communicate what you have to offer—without suddenly becoming stiff or overly corporate.

And when nobody else is doing those things, that small amount of effort can become a HUGE advantage. In this week’s episode, we’re talking about “interview culture” and how to match the vibe of your industry while quietly raising your own standard.

If this episode doesn’t sound like it applies to you, send it to the person in your life who insists they don’t need interview advice because their industry is “different.” We know they think they don’t need us. That’s okay. We’re still right.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Victoria “Emma and Sarah, you both are stars! I'm so grateful to have found Interview Boss as you've completely changed my job search mindset. I was looking for a new role after a layoff while on maternity leave (ouch!), and I was in such a negative headspace going in. I'd been casually looking for over a year in fear of a future layoff and not having success so the negativity spiral was very real. After listening (and re-listening) to your episodes over two months, I was a changed woman. I navigated 2.5 months of intense job hunting, 60+ applications, 20+ interviews, and 3 job tasks with you by my side. My husband joked that our newborn was going to have an Aussie accent after listening to so many hours of you two! I'm so happy to have landed a new role where there were all green flags during the interview process. You helped me SO much to bounce back from the jobs I didn't land (I won't call them rejections!), and I know that positivity helped me to land the right role. Thank you, and (if you read this on air), job seekers listening, keep your head up! You will persevere!”

🎥 Check out our free training - Top Interview Tips https://www.interviewboss.com.au/top-interview-tips

🏫 To get step by step help with your interview prep on demand check out our Interview Academy https://www.interviewboss.com.au/interview-academy

☕ Did our podcast help you out? 233: Can't Start a New Job Right Away? Here's What to Say
23 jul 202627 min
"When can you start?" is a simple interview question...but what if the honest answer is "It depends."

In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma unpack how to have this conversation when factors like childcare, relocation or other commitments mean you can't give a straightforward date.

Being upfront can feel risky, but it's often the best approach. We'll share how to set realistic expectations, explain your situation professionally, and give employers a timeframe they can actually work with.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Chris C who bought us 4 coffees!

“Thank you so much for your help prepping for my interview! I landed a dream job as an instructional designer for a construction company, but it came out of nowhere and I had little time to prep. In one of your episodes you gave some great advice on how to politely and respectfully lead an interview if the interviewer doesn’t ask many questions. That’s exactly the curveball I was given, but I was able to steer the conversation toward my STAR responses and knocked it out of the park.“

232: Help! Someone From My Current Job Is On My Interview Panel!
16 jul 202629 min
POV: You finally land a job interview...then discover someone from your current workplace is sitting on the interview panel. 😳 What do you do?

In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma unpack a listener's real-life government job interview dilemma, including whether to tell your boss you're job hunting, how to handle a familiar face on the panel, and why the best advice doesn't always come from the internet.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Eibhan!

“Hi Sarah and Emma! I am about to finish my final year of university and the graduate job market over here is super competitive. I could spend hours talking about the amount of jobs I have applied for and not heard back from or applied and things didn’t work out, but I finally found my dream role. It’s essentially a tech consultant role, which combines my two greatest interests (coding and working with people). Once I realised I actually had a shot even after seeing that this job was super competitive, I was recommended your podcast by my brother (shoutout to you Joey love you). Listening to your podcast I felt like one of the girls despite being a tall large man. Anyway, in short, I grew so much in confidence and built trust in myself, came into the interview in the right way. I can’t cover the amount of tips that helped me, but my favourite was from the episode about using your notebook. The final interview went really great and I came out of it feeling like I smashed it. The interesting thing is that about two weeks later I got an email saying they have an update they would love to share with me. My heart dropped when they then told me I was a ‘perfect silver medalist’. They went with another candidate but essentially proposed something else for me. They really loved who I was and my story and decided to kind of create a new role for me which is pretty much identical to the one I applied for but with a higher salary!! Thank you guys so much for everything you do and I cannot recommend this podcast enough for just clarity, confidence and the perfect boost you need to use when going into an interview. 231: The Best Resume Format for Temp and Short-Term Contract Work
8 jul 202630 min
Temping and contract work can be an incredible way to build experience. BUT when your resume is full of short-term roles, how do you keep it clear and easy to follow?

In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma share different strategies you can use to structure a resume with lots of contract gigs.

Remember, there isn't just one way to structure a CV! It's about choosing the format that best explains your experience.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Hannah from the US who bought us 15 coffees!

“I started listening in 2022 and secured my first internal job transfer to a different department. Fast forward to now, we have always wanted to relocate out of state and decided 2026 was the year. I applied for a job back in April (it’s now the end of June) and didn’t expect to hear much as it was kind of a stretch goal, in a different state, and a different industry than I currently work. The position had been open for several months because it was a new team they were building and wanted the ‘right candidate’ which was intimidating because I had to be the best of the best, not just the best candidate they were interviewing. After 3 weeks of nothing, I got a phone screening and had about a week to prepare. Through each stage of the process, I listened to tons of your episodes on phone screenings, perfecting my 'tell me about yourself' answer, pep talks when waiting, how to talk about relocation, how to prep for multiple interview rounds, panel interviews, negotiating start date, and the importance of research. I'm proud to say that after a 2.5-month, lengthy, intense job interview process, I received an offer at the very top of the salary range and was able to negotiate my start date to fit the move and a small break. 230: Are you missing out on opportunities by not following up?
1 jul 202629 min
Waiting to hear back after a job interview is one of the most agonising parts of the job search.

So when TikTok tells you there's one more thing you should be doing to increase your chances, it's hard not to wonder...am I missing out?

In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma unpack the growing trend of "value-add" interview follow-ups, where candidates are told to send articles, ideas or extra information to prove they're the best person for the job. Does it actually work, or is it just creating unnecessary stress for job seekers?

If you've ever worried there are secret interview rules everyone else knows except you, this episode is for you.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Gillian!

"Hello my Aussie Queens! I am so incredibly grateful that I found you when I did. 'Tell me about yourself,' you say? Well, sure! After nearly six years in my current role, I finally realized that the paycheck wasn't worth the terrible culture. I decided it was time to seriously look for something new, and holy crap...things have changed! After four months, more than 100 applications, and over 20 interviews, I am thrilled to say that I start my new position in just over a week. Listening to your podcast throughout this process has been absolutely crucial to my growth and confidence. I took the water, and I never once had to clench my butt cheeks because I felt prepared. I knew exactly what I wanted to share about myself, what my 'best bits' were, and was able to let my genuine self shine through. There were moments when I was certain an offer was coming...and it didn't. There were other times when I knew they were just keeping me 'warm,' only to receive another rejection letter. And then another. And another. Your honesty about how brutal this process can be on your mindset was such a gift. The laughter, the reality checks, and the constant reminders that rejection isn't a reflection of your worth carried me through so many moments when I questioned myself, my value, and my decisions. I am beyond excited to join my new team. I know I have so much to offer, and they were able to see that because of the confidence and tools I gained from you both. Also, I was able to negotiate my salary and won't be losing any pay! Also, can we please give a massive shout-out to the recruiters who genuinely care? The ones who communicate, support candidates, and treat people like humans. There were several times during this process when I didn't even want the job anymore because of how poorly the recruiter handled the initial phone screen. To all the good humans doing recruiting the right way, thank you. Sending a huge thank you from Boise, Idaho, USA. Sarah and Emma, thank you for all the support, encouragement, laughs, and wisdom you share with so many people navigating one of the most vulnerable experiences of their careers. My heart is full. 229: You've done your time in the grad job post uni. Where to next?!
17 jun 202634 min
We often talk about how tricky it is to land that first job after graduating from uni. But what about your SECOND job after uni? Early in your career, every move can feel so critical. It can also feel like a funny middle ground - you’re not yet experienced, but also not a grad anymore - can you even mention things you did during your degree anymore!?

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma answer a question from a listener Jeff who is thinking about his future, and give him some practical tips and that special flavour of Interview Boss wisdom.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Katie who bought us 5 coffees!

“I've owed you these coffees for a while! Two years ago I found your podcast while applying for a role which was similar to my existing job (comms), but in a field that I wanted to move into (policy). It completely changed how I approach the job application process. Your episodes on crafting your career story, tips on the 'casual chat', and your mindset episodes for before and after an interview were so helpful. I was offered the role and accepted it, hoping that it might be a doorway to a career pivot. Two years on and a policy role finally came up internally, working in an area I'm passionate about and in the team I want to work in. I put my hand up, and listened to your episodes about internal interviews, which helped me to just accept that it was going to be a bit awkward! This meant I could get out of my head and just focus on demonstrating my transferable skills, and owning what I'd achieved despite some of this being shared wins. I was offered the role and will start in a few weeks! THANK YOU for creating the Interview Boss podcast and helping all of us reach our career goals. And a shout out to my sister Freya too for putting me on to you guys! I am a medical doctor in the UK. You rightly acknowledge that things are a little different interview-wise for this kind of job compared to other fields, but I want you to know that I found the Interview Boss podcast so helpful in the run-up to an important interview I had. In particular the episodes on 'best bits,' on thinking really deeply about the scenarios you choose to prepare as answers, and the episode for immediately post-interview. I got written feedback on my interview. I made sure I got in my 'best bits', and they landed with the interviewers and made the impression I was hoping they would, because they relayed my 'best bits' back to me in my (amazing!!) feedback. Reading the feedback makes me feel very proud, and what's more, I got offered the job: a training post as an anesthetist! Thank you very much for your insight and guidance, it's empowering and it works. I will be coming back to Interview Boss again and recommending it to people in my life. So far, the episodes I have listened to have been very informative and entertaining. Thank you for putting the added time and effort into the rest of the world! My question is, how do I put into words 'this position is very undervalued?' I want to apply but I feel like it's at minimum $30k off the mark. Is it worth going through with an interview to then attempt a high ball negotiation? It feels like when you’re house shopping and it's $100k overpriced so you put in an offer way the hell below. Yesterday, the offer came in! After 18 years with the same company, I was actually head hunted for a VP of Sales position, a big move up. Being in sales I get contacted a lot for jobs, but none had ever interested me, until this one, which I thought was worth giving a go. I haven’t had a proper interview in almost a decade, so I was very nervous when I found out I’d have four separate interviews with members of the C-suite including my manager and the CEO. I went online and found you all and binge listened to about 15 of your most relevant episodes. I felt so prepared having all my best bits laid out and found ways to roll them into every response that I could. I left each interview knowing they were impressed with my responses and I owe a chunk of that to you both. 225: The Biggest Mistakes People Make When Researching Companies
14 mei 202628 min
Researching the company before an interview sounds simple…but most candidates are either doing too little, way too much, or struggling to explain what they actually found.

In this week's episode, we unpack what employers are really looking for when they ask “what do you know about us?” and how much research is actually necessary.

We also cover how to handle surprise phone calls, organise your notes, and communicate your research in a way that feels natural and genuine instead of overly rehearsed.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Mindy who bought us 10 coffees!

“One year ago, I was in a really bad place. I knew I needed to get out of my old job for my mental health, but I had no idea what I was doing next. I felt overwhelmed and stuck. Then I found Interview Boss through a friend’s recommendation. I usually hate podcasts, but I binged your show for about forty eight hours straight. I listened nonstop, even on the drive to my interview. I was sweating bullets the whole time, convinced I had no idea what questions they were going to ask and that I was going to screw up. Every time a negative thought popped in, I forced myself to go back to what I wanted to talk about and the things I had learned from the show. I tried making small talk from the front door to the interview room, which does not come naturally to me at all. Even though it felt awkward, it helped break the ice while we waited for the other interviewer to join us. Then, right at the start of the interview, I literally tripped when I went in for the handshake. We laughed about it, but I replayed that moment in my head a thousand times after I left. Turns out, it did not matter. They were excited about me anyway and could not wait to hire me. That was when it really clicked that your approach actually works, even when things are not perfect. Since then, things have kept moving forward in ways I never expected. Six months later, I ended up planning an event that led me to network with my current employer. That one moment turned into my dream job. I used your techniques for that one too, and here I am. I owe you more than just coffee. Thank you for being real, for helping people when they really need it, and for keeping the show both helpful and entertaining. Bless you both.”

224: Screen Sharing During Remote Interviews: The New Live Task Trend
6 mei 202631 min
Being asked to share your screen on a meeting is stressful enough…let alone in an interview.

One of our listeners was told she’d need to complete a series of live tasks while screen sharing as part of the interview process. This included drafting an email to an executive, analysing data, and refining a presentation on the spot, all while talking through her thinking.

In this episode, Sarah and Emma break down this growing trend and why employers are leaning into it. We discuss what they’re really trying to assess and the importance of showing them how you think, not just what you know.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Mindy who bought 5 coffees!

"Hi Emma & Sarah, I’m reaching out on a total high because I just signed my offer letter! I found your show just as I landed an interview with a major nonprofit that perfectly aligns with my values. I binged your episodes while decorating and reorganizing my daughter’s room for the 20th time, and on my many trips back and forth to the refrigerator (unemployment sure is fun). It gave me the opportunity to soak in your wisdom and let it become part of me on a cellular level. Your advice put me in the perfect headspace to successfully complete the initial hiring manager interview. The real challenge would be the second round. It was an 8-person panel asking behavioral questions (my biggest weakness). I spent the next week earmarking those episodes and building my story bank per your advice. I sailed through the first seven questions, but the final one stumped me a bit as I didn't have a canned response. Perhaps because it was a bit spicy or it sounded less-rehearsed, they actually loved the answer. The hiring manager even said that he really liked my answer, it must have resonated. They extended an offer the very next day! I’ve been telling everyone I know to tune in to your show, its such a gem and I'm so thankful I found it! It also spared my husband from having to sit and listen to me practice the real-time structuring and word-choicing of my responses. He's a very patient man but he was reaching his limit. Which reminds me, I really loved your advice about sounding like yourself, and not a newscaster, because I’m guilty of doing that. I’m going to keep listening to your podcast even though I landed the job, because you guys are a joy to listen to. Thanks again, I truly owe this win to you.”

223: The Disclosure Dilemma: Neurodivergence in the Workplace
1 mei 202640 min
In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma tackle the disclosure conundrum, after hearing from listeners navigating neurodivergence diagnoses, workplace stigma and the fear of being misunderstood.

In Part 3 of our neurodivergence series we break down the pros and cons, including better support, accommodations and working relationships, to stigma, bias and assumptions about your capability.

We also cover when to disclose and why how you approach the conversation matters just as much as the decision itself.

Whether you've had a recent diagnosis, are masking your way through burnout or just want to feel more understood at work, this episode will help you make a decision that feels right for you.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Helary who bought us 5 coffees!

“Hi Emma and Sarah, I could not even begin to describe how incredible your advice has been in my job searches. I was happy in my role as research project manager in a smaller not-for-profit until they had a change in CEO a year ago. With this change, the workplace culture changed and it became a very toxic workplace. After experiencing repeated bullying at work, it became apparent to me I needed to leave. That was when I jumped onto your podcast and listened to so many episodes whilst job searching. I landed on a role which was a lateral but seemingly strategic move into government. I was happy until they announced that they would be making rounds of redundancies because of budget cuts. I then had my manager call me to tell me that I would most likely be made redundant because I was still in the probation period and they could make me redundant with no redundancy payment and hardly any notice period. I was devastated and feeling financially vulnerable so I started job searching again, less than 6 months after my last job search. Again, I tuned into your podcast and your podcast kept me grounded in an unstable time, with practical advice (particularly on thinking through deeply about best bits) but also with humour and sisterly banter! The wonderful thing about applying when the threat of redundancy was hanging over me was that I applied for a large variety of roles, and even for roles that felt like a long shot. I ended up landing an interview for one of the long shot roles. I went into the interview with my best bits which I spent hours on and a few days later, got the job offer! Not only did your advice help me find a job after a terrible time of financial insecurity and uncertainty, but I got a promotion into a role that pays me 40k more than my current role!!! My last 4 roles have been in the same pay grade and I was able to finally break the glass ceiling into my first Manager role! A huge thank you to you both. 222: 6 things we think our listeners need to hear right now!
22 apr 202633 min
In this lighter, more off-the-cuff episode, Sarah and Emma each bring three things they think you need to hear right now…no prep, just vibes. Some are the reminders you didn’t know you needed, some might call you out (in a good way), and others will give you the little push to keep going.

We react to each other in real time, which means a mix of honesty, tough love, and a few laughs along the way.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Megan who bought us 3 coffees!

“If my story was an episode of your podcast, it would be called: 'I was offered the role of a lifetime but turned it down!' Like so many others, I was referred to your podcast by a friend after I sought her advice on a job opportunity that was in an industry she'd worked in before. The job was my dream role, doing what I've done for many years but in an industry I have no experience in. (Clue: there are only 18 of these organisations in Australia, most of them in Melbourne). The role would require me to move interstate, which I was open to, but it was such a far flung possibility that I would even be interviewed, let alone be offered the job, that I put that in the 'cross that bridge when I come to it' basket. I binged a ton of your episodes ahead of my first interview (via Teams) and you had so many tangible tips and tricks that I left the call feeling like I'd smashed it. Turns out I did! They flew me to Melbourne for a second interview and to present my response to a task (quick check on Spotify, yep Interview Boss has episodes about that too!) and left the organisation feeling like I'd done my best. Maybe not well enough to get the job but I was proud of my efforts. A week goes by and they let me know they need more time. I figure I didn't get the job and that's ok. I'd gotten so much out of the experience, including a huge confidence boost, and didn't have to contemplate the logistics of an interstate move! I was wrong, the following week, I was offered my dream job. I was absolutely floored, and so proud of myself. After taking some time to consider (during which they offered me flexibility to work remotely during the transition interstate, and agreed to an increased salary) I ultimately decided that it wasn't the right time to uproot my family for this opportunity. These coffees are to say thank you for your fabulous content; I really do believe your tips were highly effective in helping me secure this offer, and while I'm devastated to not be able to take up the role, I'm hopeful that something similar will eventuate for me in the future. Your episode on dream jobs was helpful here, helping me take it down off the pedestal! Perhaps I could request an episode on how to handle it when your career trajectory doesn't go as planned, how to accept the decisions you've made and trust you're where you need to be! Thanks for the great podcast, legends. 221: The Counter Offer Trap: Should You Stay or Go?
16 apr 202633 min
Ever handed in your notice…only to suddenly become very valuable?

After years of being overlooked for a raise, support, or promotion, one listener finally quit, only to be hit with a last-minute counter offer: more money, any title she wanted, and a whole lot of “what ifs.” So… do you stay? Or is it already too late?

In this episode, Sarah and Emma unpack why counter offers happen, the psychology behind suddenly being “seen,” and how to decide whether it’s worth reconsidering, or a sign to walk away for good.

We also dive into how to handle your notice period when you’re feeling hurt, angry, and completely checked out…without burning bridges or undoing your hard-earned reputation.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Liz who bought us 5 coffees!

"Thank you so much Emma & Sarah. It took me 6 months to find a gig (thankfully while working)! It has become super competitive, tougher screening & interview process and one had to have very specific skill sets, almost had to tick every single box they listed. It was a very exhausting experience. I have finally landed a job that is good enough for the next year. Your podcasts have been very encouraging, funny and informative. I had not considered what it would be like from the recruiter/ employer perspective. For example, in keeping the candidate 'warm' haha. Also helps not to take it too seriously right? 18 mrt 202636 min
Starting your first internship can feel intimidating, especially if it’s your first time in a corporate environment.

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down exactly how to impress from day one. From getting the dress code right and setting up your systems, to knowing when to ask questions (and when to back yourself), we cover the small details that make a big impact.

We unpack how to stay organised, show initiative without overstepping, and build confidence even if you’re shy or feel out of your depth.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Christina who bought us 5 coffees!

“I found Interview Boss the night before an interview and started with the episode meant for right before you go in. I immediately laughed when they said something like, 'If you’re listening to this to try and prepare for an interview…you’re listening at the wrong time.' Message received! So I went back and started listening to more episodes in the weeks leading up to my interviews. I had been in the same industry for 14 years and was finally ready to make a career change, which was both exciting and honestly a little intimidating. Your podcast helped me slow down and really think through my value, how to tell my story, and how to communicate my experience in a way that actually connected in interviews. 217: Neurodivergence and accommodations in the job search - Part 1
4 mrt 202633 min
Job Interviews aren't designed with every brain in mind.

After hearing from listeners navigating interviews with ADHD, autism, and processing differences, Sarah and Emma dive into how traditional hiring processes can unintentionally test skills that have little to do with actually doing the job. From remembering answers on the spot and processing complex questions verbally, to eye contact, small talk, and performing in unfamiliar environments, we unpack the hidden expectations some candidates are facing.

This episode is Part 1 of our deep dive into neurodivergence and the job hunt, focusing on self-reflection and understanding how your brain shows up in interviews before deciding whether to ask for adjustments.

We’re also calling for listener stories to help shape Part 2, where'll we answer the big questions. If you’ve asked for accommodations, disclosed during hiring, or found strategies that made interviews more accessible, we’d love to hear from you.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Sonya who bought us 10 coffees!

“Dear Emma and Sarah, I started listening to your podcast in October 2025 after accepting a junior-level position because I felt it was the best I was going to get. Since 2023, I’ve been on a steady path of building skills and applying for roles, trying to reposition myself professionally. After running my own small business for ten years and then pivoting to pursue a MPH, I truly believed I would be able to land a meaningful position. Instead, I repeatedly heard that other candidates were “more suitable.” I revised my resume countless times and decided I needed to strengthen my skill set. I took Spanish classes because being bilingual was listed as a qualification in many job postings. But when I noticed that project management skills were consistently required for the roles I wanted, I studied for over a year and earned my Project Management Professional certification – something I wish I had discovered fifteen years earlier. (I would have run my business a lot better!) Then, I began applying for junior-level roles because I convinced myself I wasn’t qualified for more. That mindset led me to accept the job I mentioned earlier. Then I found your podcast. The most transformative shift came from the episode about interviews being a two-way process. I voraciously listened to as many episodes as I could while continuing to apply for jobs. Recently, I advanced to a panel interview with six executive leaders for a high-level role I wasn’t even sure I had a chance at. That was when I enrolled in Interview Academy. I had two weeks to prepare. What I discovered was that I had been approaching interviews in fragments; bits and pieces of preparation, but nothing cohesive. Interview Academy is structured which helped me step back and see the full scope of my 28-year career. I had spent so much time focusing on where I thought I “should be” that I minimized what I had actually accomplished. Through Interview Academy, I recognized the depth and breadth of my work: collaborating with local businesses, leading community outreach efforts, publishing a book, and launching an online industry magazine. I had been embarrassed by some of these things because I didn’t think they reflected “current” skills. Thanks to you Sarah and Emma, I could clearly see the impact I’ve made on organizations, clients, and colleagues. Now, as I pursue a career in philanthropy, I feel confident in what I bring to the next nonprofit I serve regardless if I get this position or not. My deepest gratitude and appreciation to you for creating something that helped me rediscover my professional worth. It was something I didn’t even realize I was looking for—but truly needed. Keep doing the good work you do! 216: Trial Shifts: What Employers Are Really Looking For
25 feb 202632 min
Being asked to come in for a trial shift can feel exciting…and slightly confusing. Is it a great sign? Is it free labour? And how do you actually perform well when you’re being assessed in real time?

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack what you can expect at a trial shift, and why it’s often less about skill, and more about how you show up.

We discuss what employers are actually looking for when they see you “in action,” especially in hands-on and customer-facing roles.

Most importantly, we’ll help you shift your mindset. Because a trial isn’t just about being tested, it’s your opportunity to decide whether the job is right for you too.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Maisie who bought us 2 coffees!

“Hey Emma and Sarah! Just wanted to thank you so much for your awesome and insightful podcast that helped me so much during my difficult job search journey. I've been looking for a new job in a totally new industry after having a terrible experience in my last company and leaving the job four months ago. The environment was toxic and the managers were really mean, and it meant my confidence in the working world was pretty low by the end of it. I started doing interviews as soon as I left and faced rejections, as well as two times where I actually did get the job, and then the offer got retracted afterwards due to budget cuts or them changing their mind. Feeling very defeated and making the decision to venture down a new path I found your podcast along the way and binged it all month, as well as listening to your pep talk episode about 4 times on route to each interview (love it!). Your advice made me feel confident, prepared and like I had all the attributes and skills to succeed within me so long as I prepared well, which you guys helped me do. Your lighthearted and funny outlooks also helped me feel less nervous and relaxed about the whole process. It's also worth mentioning that the success stories at the beginning of each episode not only inspired me, but helped me manifest to be one of those people one day getting the shoutout at the beginning of an episode because like those people, I'd achieved my dream job! I had a final interview for my perfect role last week, thinking it would be too good to be true to get it, but they called me on Friday to say I'd got the job. I was so beyond happy and I know your help was part of my success. I am going to recommend you to everyone I know searching for a job or needing career help.”

215: You Can’t Hack Your Way Into a New Job: Correlation Does NOT Equal Causation!
18 feb 202625 min
Job searching can make you feel a little superstitious. One person swears a specific resume template got them hired. Someone else says it was the follow-up email. Another is convinced one “brilliant” question in the interview sealed the deal.

But we have to remember: correlation does not equal causation!!!

In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack the urge to assign a single cause to a complex outcome.

We break down why our brains love to create neat little stories (hello, confirmation bias), especially when so much of the hiring process feels outside our control. We explain why those conclusions are often oversimplified, and sometimes completely wrong.

If you’ve ever gone down a Reddit rabbit hole trying to reverse-engineer someone else’s success, this episode will bring you back to earth in the best way. The truth about landing a job is usually far less sexy than “one weird trick."

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Lulu who bought us a coffee!

“I've been job-searching for 16 months. I've had a good job at managerial level, but wanted to find something closer to home as the commute (1.5hrs each way) was too much with a family. I have been with my employer for 10 years so I was nervous about the recruitment process. I stumbled upon your podcast and listened religiously while driving (benefits of long commute.) Your tips make so much sense, but I would have not thought of them myself. I also really enjoyed your style and there were some LOL moments. I'm happy to say that after more than 15 applications, 4 interviews and 2 offers, I'm about to start a new job much closer to home that I'm very excited about. I used your tips for getting my career story polished, focusing on the best bits in my interview answers, fine tuning my SAR and accepting water at the interview. 214: Applying for Your First Manager Role: Owning your Experience (Part 2)
11 feb 202638 min
What are you supposed to say in an interview…when you've never actually been a manager before?

In Part 2 of this deep dive series, we explain why self-awareness is your secret weapon, what to say when you don’t have a perfect example, and how to show a growth mindset instead of panicking. We also share the fundamental advice every first-time manager isn’t always told, but absolutely needs to hear.

Remember, you don’t need to fake leadership experience. You need to show how you think, how you learn, and how you’ll lead.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Kyle who bought us 5 coffees!

“Hi Emma and Sarah! I would like to thank you both so much for the helpful advice on your episodes. After 6-7 months of interviewing I was able to land a job that I believe is the right fit for me with many opportunities for growth. I moved for personal reasons and I was leaving behind a job that I held for over 5 years. It was actually quite difficult to land a job that was the right fit for me. I had many swings and misses like making it to the final round 3 times prior to finally getting this role. But your episodes deep diving into your 'best bits' and really thinking and doing the hard part was much needed to keep persevering. I was able to connect my experiences and skills that I had acquired over the years to the job description and tailor my stories to what they were looking for. After the final interview I knew I had left it out all on the field. The very next day the hiring manager called me and said that the team loved me and that I would be a great fit. I was so excited that I had finally done it! After accepting the role I even listened to the episode on how to resign from your job as I've never had to before. Thank you again for all of your help! I cannot wait to start this new chapter in my life. I will forever recommend and listen when the time comes again for another job search. 213: Applying for Your First Manager Role: Getting the Mindset Right (Part 1)
4 feb 202636 min
Going for your first manager-level role can feel like a whole different sport. Suddenly it’s less about your individual output and more about leadership, dealing with people problems and judgement.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, Sarah and Emma unpack the mindset shift you need when applying for your first leadership role. We discuss the fear of not feeling “ready,” why trying to fake management experience almost always backfires, and how employers actually think about potential vs experience. If you’ve ever worried that not having the title automatically rules you out, this episode is for you.

In the next episode (Part 2) we’ll get practical with leadership-focused interview questions and how to answer them. But first, let’s get your mindset right.

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Leah who bought us a coffee!

"Hi guys! 212: The Interview Horror Story that left us SPEECHLESS
28 jan 202624 min
What would you do if the interviewers started talking about you...while you were literally sitting right there?

In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma react in real time to a listener story that made our jaws hit the floor.

During an interview assessment, Katie could see live messages being exchanged between the recruiter and hiring manager about her performance, on the same laptop she was using! Yep. While she was doing the task!

We unpack how to handle this if it happens to you, and what your options are in the moment.

Do you speak up? Power through? Walk out? Or flag it later in writing?

🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Cherie who bought us a coffee!

“I found Interview Boss about 12 months ago when I had started searching for a new role after a career break to support my young family. My last role before the break was a manager/leadership role, and I was feeling stuck between wanting to return at the same level, and massively lacking confidence to apply at that level during a terrible job market. I also live in a regional area where the number of senior roles in my industry is fairly close to zero (yikes!). I had a couple of interviews in the first few months of searching, and though I felt the interviews generally went well, I didn't land the roles. Feeling depleted and questioning my skills, I listened to more of your episodes. That's when I went back to one of your older eps about writing your career story, and I realised that, in interviews, I was telling a career story that I had actually outgrown. So I re-wrote my career story and practised it until it felt natural but not rehearsed. By the next time I interviewed, my new career story really changed the tone and trajectory of the interview and gave me more confidence to share examples that better reflected my strengths as a leader. I'm thrilled to share that I start a new role next week after a year-long search. It's a leadership contract role with a brilliant community organisation. I'm so excited to get started, and so appreciative to Interview Boss for sparking my new perspective during the interview stage.
