If YOU Touch Receipts, You NEED To Stop!
Open in Hinto About this video
Dr. Rhonda Patrick, a biomedical scientist specializing in aging and disease prevention, walks through Steven's kitchen and reveals the hidden sources of BPA, phthalates, microplastics, and forever chemicals that most people handle every single day without realizing it. And the most surprising culprit of all is the receipt. She explains that receipts are printed on thermal paper, and the printing works because the paper is coated with bisphenol A (BPA). They are, in her words, literally covered in it. Cashiers who handle receipts all day have extremely high levels of BPA, especially if they use hand sanitizer or lotion, because BPA is fat-soluble and the creams carry it across the skin and into the bloodstream at levels up to 100 times higher. She points to a study in adolescent boys where high BPA levels were associated with a 50% reduction in testosterone, at a stage of life when testosterone is critical for development. Her advice: opt for emailed receipts, avoid touching them when you can, and if you work as a cashier, wear nitrile gloves (not latex, which does not protect against BPA). She then goes through the rest of the kitchen. Black plastic is one of the worst offenders because it is typically made from recycled electronics, which contain flame retardants (cancer-causing brominated chemicals) that leach into food, especially hot food. Acidic and spicy foods accelerate the leaching, which means hot sauce, ketchup, and mustard in plastic containers are delivering chemicals straight onto your meals. She recommends switching all condiments to glass.
