Many people know Carol Hutchins as the winningest coach in the history of NCAA Softball and Michigan Athletics, but few know that her storied journey was filled with challenges that were and still are shared by all of women’s sports. Carol’s speech takes us through the happenings in the post-Title IX era that transformed the story of women’s sports from one of underrepresentation, underinvestment, and undervaluation to one of opportunity, achievement, and acceptance, as women moved beyond tomboy labels to become dominant leaders on and off the field. I am Carol Hutchins, or Coach Hutch to most anyone who knows me. I have spent my entire adult life in college. I was the Head Softball coach at UM for 38 years, and have been here now for 44 years. I coached championship teams on the field, but I actually coached championship people, by teaching them that excellence is harder than average, and anything less than excellence is not acceptable.
